Fruit Of A Spiritual Tree

This blog uses evidentiary law as a metaphor for spiritual evidence of Gods Kingdom. In this post I will use one of evidentiary law’s legal metaphors as my metaphor. The exclusionary rule is a part of Constitutional Law and is designed to exclude evidence obtained in violation of a criminal defendant’s Fourth Amendment rights.  This amendment guarantees the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.

The metaphor I want to use is called Fruit of the poisonous tree which logically means that if the source of the evidence (the “tree”) is tainted, then anything gained from it (the “fruit”) is tainted as well. This rule and metaphor is all about the authenticity of the source of evidence and how it was obtained. This is particularity true when it comes to the spiritual evidence of God’s Kingdom.

John 14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Matthew 21:33-35 “Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. 34 Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. 35 And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.

Spiritual evidence does not originate in this material realm. Therefore the source of real spiritual evidence when gathered and presented says something about the relationship between the presenter and the source. In the material world there is always a question that must be satisfied, and it is, how was the evidence obtained? If it can be proven that during the gathering of evidence, the rights of the defendant were violated, the evidence is excluded.

As joint heirs to the Kingdom of God, spiritual evidence reveals our relationship to the source of the Kingdom.  Since Jesus is the way, there is only one gate to this evidence and that is through Christ. The vinedressers in the parable got greedy and failed to recognize the owner of the vineyard and the ones he sent. Scripture reveals that the carnal mind or material mindset cannot understand spiritual relationships.

Like Christ when we present spiritual evidence the jury in the material world naturally tends to view that evidence as having come from a physical source and does not understand the spiritual source. But we are children of God and sent ones and therefore the evidence belongs to the source and not the messengers. Our eyes have been opened to the Spirit of God and that was a work of God’s Spirit. We now understand that we humans are vessels and have the capacity to carry the Presence of God’s Spirit. We have become the “Dominion of God” Himself.

As Disciples of Jesus we are learning to fill our vessels to overflowing and carry our Father’s Presence so that others might take, eat and become awaken, like we have become. But if we try to force that awakening we will have violated their rights and the spiritual evidence we carry will be dismissed or excluded and our reputations as vessels will discredited. Jesus stood at the door and knocked and we must do likewise.

1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

God is All in All, but each individual consciousness must freely open up in order to experience Father’s indwelling Presence. The Presence of God’s spirit that we carry is born out of intimacy and a trust that He will forgive us when we open ourselves to Him. People in the material world tend to resist opening up if they have experienced a violation of trust. Many religions and cults cross this line of sovereignty in their zealousness to help people experience the freedom that they have come to know.

One of Jesus favorite sayings after He has carried in Father’s Presence, is that “your faith has made you whole”. A sign of spiritual maturity is the ability to enter into the intimate place and open up to our spiritual Father so He can fill us to overflowing with His Presence and then carefully and respectfully carry His Presence into the material world so people  can freely take from what has been freely given to us. If we manipulate people in to taking something they are not ready for the result is never good. Likewise if a prosecutor thinks someone is guilty and fixes the evidence to get a verdict, he performs a miscarriage of justice.

Jesus operated from a place of Sabbath rest trusting that God’s Spirit would not return void but that our Father’s Spirit would accomplish His will. Jesus from a place of complete trust said “Not My will but Your will be done”. Our goal as Disciples is to become like our master by taking on His yoke (teachings, mind-set, and instructions). We must willingly become Disciples of Jesus if we expect others willingly chose to be Disciples. When Jesus laid His life down He did it trusting that our Father’s Spirit Words, left in the hearts of His disciples would get the job done.

Intimacy leads to freedom, and forgiveness, trust, and rest leads to intimacy.

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

No Exclusion For True Evidence

We have covered various types of evidence as defined by the constitutional laws of evidence used in the judicial system in the United States. I am using these evidence types and evidentiary rules as metaphors to encourage us in our presentation of spiritual evidence concerning the Kingdom of God (KoG). As Disciples of Christ we are yoked with the responsibility to reveal heaven or the Kingdom to those that are blind to its existence. The metaphor index of this site will link you to the evidentiary topics already covered in this blog thus far.

Today I want to begin a conversation about the rules that cause the exclusion of evidence. In order for a system of law to render justice, all evidence must be based in truth, all evidence must be handled impartially and the system must incorporate a sense of mercy when rendering its verdict in the name of justice. If all of these are met then people who interact with the system of justice will be more likely to recognize and accept its authority.

John 10:37-38 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”

The works of God Kingdom are the manifested evidence of His spiritual Kingdom. From the big picture point of view, all that we see in this material world is a manifestation of spiritual reality and truth of His Kingdom. However on a personal level we still need proof of that spiritual reality. This is what we Children of God or Disciples of Christ are supposed to be doing. We bring that evidence into this material world and into the personal lives of the people around us. If successful we make disciples of them who in turn likewise do the same to the people around them (Discipleship 101).

The goal of our transformative journey is that of becoming like Christ who is one with God our Father. Jesus the Master when in his earthly body was the first fruit and we are now joint heirs with him for all eternity. We have been adopted into God’s invisible spiritual Kingdom for this purpose. When a prince or princess is born to a king they are immediately heirs but they must learn how to rule effectively and justly. In time people will observe them, give them trust and finally submit giving deference and respect to the authority resident in that individual. Just because one is heir to the throne does not mean that everyone under the authority of that kingdom will freely give their hearts to the throne or its joint-heirs.

Jesus says do not believe me, but believe the works as evidence of God and His Kingdom. So by faith we received His works of forgiveness, mercy, adoption, sanctification, righteousness and His very presence which provides us with the authority and power to present the same evidence to others.  In turn others by faith may freely receive from the spiritual realm that which we have by faith been freely given.

Under the Exclusionary Rule, evidence collected or analyzed in violation of the defendant’s constitutional rights is sometimes in admissible for a criminal prosecution in a court of law if illegally obtained. In American justice system there is a presumption of innocence but in the kingdom of God, God Himself provided right standing with Himself through Jesus. Earthly judicial systems are biased and can be corrupted for various reasons.  In God’s Kingdom He is the Judge and Jury and Jesus is our advocate.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

John 20:21-23 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The evidence we present has one purpose and that is to reconcile those who are blind to the reality of our Father’s love and His Kingdom. We as disciples are have been given the task of reconciliation. As we learn to present spiritual evidence to the people in our lives we provide the prof that establishes the fact of God’s love for them and the reality of His Kingdom.

Master Jesus was sent by God our Father and now we are the ones sent to complete the task. We are the plan of God and Master Jesus is the example of how we can get the job done. If we are able to renew our minds to the fact that we are one with God we can begin to have the necessary faith to allow the very presence of God that is inside of us to work through us.

If we continue to believe we are separated from God then we will fail to avail ourselves of the authority and power that God has made available through us. God’s Holy Spirit is resident inside of us so we can present spiritual evidence that is authentic having a chain of evidence that will ensure that it will not be excluded.  As disciples we are learning to do what Christ did. As Children of God we have the heart of our Father toward all men and women needing a sense of reconciliation.

The Kingdom of God is inside of us and we have an understanding of the spiritual realm as ones that live there. We are sent here in that authority and we have been given the responsibility to demonstrate the existence of the Kingdom. So we must remain faithful and go in the name of the one that sent us.

Luke 6:40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.

John 14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

Matthew 10:7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

Parables of Truth

Another very important type of evidence is called demonstrative. Demonstrative evidence can be simulations, and models that are useful for assisting a finder of fact in establishing context among the facts. Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God (KoG) using demonstrative evidence called parables and word pictures. These animated stories simplistically described the hidden truths of the Kingdom, its operations and it relationship to us and the world.

Mark 4:33-34 And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it. 34 But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.

Matthew 13:13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

The reason Jesus used this style of evidence was so that he could explain the multiple concepts of the kingdom using a common language that the average person could understand. The spiritual kingdom is invisible and therefore explaining its principles required material examples that could be understood by the people of that day who were hearing the message. Besides that, His audience had little to no concept of spiritual things.

By following the example of Christ we can reach our audience and jury of peers to establish spiritual facts that cannot be understood with our physical senses. Only after the resurrection of Christ has the spiritual kingdom become available to all of mankind. There is now a spiritual consciousness among mankind that can grasp the concepts of spiritual truth and allow the ones that choose to become free of the bonds in this material world.

Forgiveness, repentance, faith and grace are just a few of the concepts that have been made available to us today. Though we cannot fully understand the all-mighty, all-present and all-knowledge, characteristics of God, we can begin to create and understand, models using our earthly concepts. As we repeat the demonstrative examples that Christ used these stories become common and begin to convey spiritual truth.

Matthew 13:44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Matthew 13:45-46 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

To sell or give away everything in this earth realm for God’s Kingdom should be a reasonable response to any person who finds it. So Jesus uses the 2 parables above to demonstrate this point about the value of His Father’s spiritual Kingdom. Not only does the Kingdom exist but its value is worth more than all a person’s material possessions. To sell everything from this world is a transaction that one should gladly make, speaks of the rare opportunity that must be undertaken when the opportunity presents itself.

This treasure or pearl that is hidden in the earth also speaks to our uniqueness as earthen vessels which have something wonderful on the inside of us. In other words the truly valuable thing about us is invisible from the outside. However the person who is awakened to this hidden value would be willing to sell everything and pay a large price even though outwardly appearances do not reveal the great value hidden within.

Isaiah 11:3 (Speaking of Christ) His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

It is impossible to discern spiritual value with the things of the material world. When Jesus asked His disciples who He was He responded to their answer by saying the “flesh and blood has not revealed this to you”. The things of the material world are incapable of showing forth spiritual truth. But we who are spiritually awake can use the things of the material world to present demonstrative evidence of material truths.

I encourage all of us who are awake to pull this type of evidence out of our locker and help awaken those that remain asleep to the freedom of God and His kingdom. As help enable other to see the Kingdom of God we fulfill our calling. We are the ones sent, with a mission from our Father, to our lost brothers and sisters that are in need of a spiritual awakening in Christ.
